my story’s protagonists are consistently lesbian in their (choice to) love and (express) desire. while i write lesbian desire as part of a main character’s life, i can’t say i’ve ever written a “romance novel”.. it wouldn’t feel natural to write a straight-up lesbian love story

Mood. I write a lot of lesbian love stories, but they still don't count as romance novels, if only because romance novels have a rigid formula that you have to follow? And that's not a dig at romance. It's just like... romance readers want what they want?
yea ik what you mean. romance is a genre with its own conventions and expectations which is good and well but not my forte
