The more I think about this, the more important it seems. JUSTICE, not FREEDOM, is what I want from software. Freedom could be a means, but is not the end.https://twitter.com/lizthegrey/status/1172926347603259392 …

"Liberty, equality, fraternity"
-
Or maybe "freedom, fairness, friendship". I fear some subtleties will be lost in translation whatever I try
-
Equality means there is no discrimination (I wish this would really work...). No matter where you live, who you are, you get access to the same services, job opportunities, etc. But there is also no positive discrimination.
-
For example if you run for an election, you have to list exactly 50% women and 50% men on the list. You are not allowed to have more women because then it would not be "equal". And there are many other things that work similarly
-
So that's where the fraternity part comes into play: it's the unified healthcare system, and all taxes we pay that are redistributed for example as student grants attributed according to the family earnings or other similar helps one can get from the state
-
So applying equality limits freedom, but somewhat prevents balancing established biases, and fraternity in turn helps evening this out
-
(it's not a perfect system, even less if you take into account the implementation details, but still I think quite an improvement)
