I bet this will magically save newspapers and put millions of dollars back where they belong: in traditional media CEOs paychecks.

Breaking FB’s ad sales tools from its social network would be an interesting option. Same with google and doubleclick. You make the ad markets heavily regulated monopolies because that’s their natural state, and mandate sales to multiple companies according to some formula.
-
That would have zero impact on journalism. The ad model doesn’t work for quality content. Companies from Netflix to NYT thrive by realizing this. Companies waiting for a government bailout are going to be sadly disappointed.
-
I mean, it worked in the 80s when people had no other choice. If you ascribe to an AOC style worldview, there’s a way to replicate that. It’s by no means optimal. I honestly think we don’t need as many journalists as folks think. Activists do a great job surfacing govt. harm.

I hear people in SV have direct access to her. Maybe they should share this https://slate.com/technology/2019/01/layoffs-at-media-organizations-the-roots-of-this-crisis-go-back-decades.html … with her

Would definitely make snap more viable since adding a third network is easier if you’re managing 2 already

: The biggest threats to journalism right now are tech monopolies & concentration of ownership.
Healthy democracy *requires* high-quality journalism.
W/o a wide range of independent outlets & the revenue to sustain them, our democracy will continue to crumble.
