Thoroughly shocking report on Eastwood prison in Gloucestershire. "The cells were appalling, dilapidated and covered in graffiti, one was blood-splattered, and some had extensive scratches on the walls." Prisons just another huge crisis that has fallen out of the news.

There is limited success in arguing about the economic loss from Brexit when a sizeable proportion of Leave voters priced that in and voted for "sovereignty" anyway. Remain still bringing fact checkers to a culture war.

No idea how much Brexit was a factor but why Putin waited until 2022, given the annexation of Crimea 8 years earlier, remains an interesting question.

Former Belgian PM Guy Verhofstadt suggests Brexit emboldened Putin to invade Ukraine, telling @LBC: 'a united Europe, certainly on defence matters, would make an enormous difference. I think maybe without Brexit, maybe it was no invasion.'

Labour is winning the Brexit revolution. My latest for ⁦@unherd⁩ on the “loser’s premium” now shaping British politics. Are we witnessing the beginnings of what happened in Scotland after 2014? If so, the Tories only have themselves to blame. unherd.com/2023/01/labour
