Re-reading 's (excellent) 2014 BBS paper, I came across this gem of a trait, which I would not wish on anybody. My sympathy goes out to all those poor souls over evolutionary history whose fitness has been affected by their *particular* gassiness 🥴💨😷

Also, there are so many tight shots of Robert Redford‘s butt.

I love this movie. I wrote a term paper on it for a film class in college. Another thing that’s incomprehensible now is how the media could leverage information about wrong doing into actual political action.

The story of this paper is Paul & I wanted to highlight: (1) how opaque inference is to most scientists (is essentially superstition) (2) how bad inferential methods can become normative So the paper combines both. I wrote the title. Paul did the rest.

Since I first read it, I've never stopped thinking about "The Natural Selection of Bad Science" The paper demonstrates better than any other how science reform is more about restructuring incentives than winning logical arguments

Of this team, I only know Deborah Gordon (whose work is fantastic), but this is a super cool postdoc. I went to Wesleyan for undergrad, and I will tell you that Middletown is a pretty nice place to spend a few years.

If you've ever had an interest in evolving virtual creatures then you know who Karl Sims is. I've read all his work, but this is the first time I've seen him speak about it. Amazing to behold! ht cc

In the 1970-80's, AI was all about "computational models of mental processes". With the advent of ML, many now view AI as "algorithmic replacement of mental processes". We lost something in this transition, b/c the fun part of doing AI is gaining an understanding of ourselves.

The real question for our age is: Can you use appeals to the rules to stop people who simply refuse to follow the rules? What will you do if they keep refusing?

Thread on systemic sexism. So, confession - I've read a lot of astronaut memoirs, and there basically aren't any great ones by women, but there SHOULD BE. Why is this systemic? Because women were blocked from the most exciting early programs - Mercury, Gemini, Apollo.

Huh. I fired up for the first time in a while, and the first thing it did was pop a dialog warning me that a paper in my collection has been retracted. It's now got a little red X by the title and an assessment from now appears in its metadata. Cool.

Also, this book is only $10! I've looked through it, it's great. A really nice alternative to the other ABM books out there, with a stronger focus on model analysis and social science.
