I don't think all scientists are professional scientists. A lot of undergraduates do research without being paid but many of them are great scientists. That said, probably anybody working as a researcher in a lab *should* be paid, but that's a whole other can of worms

There's more to being a scientist than just the science, and the long training and years of experience is necessary. Undergrads are scientists-in-training. In my mind, science slowly takes a over more of your life until it becomes your "thing", then you're a scientist?

I don't think either Darwin or Mendel were trained, or paid. But I believe they were scientist .

i would argue that "scientist" isn't a profession, but an umbrella term used to describe professionals in a wide variety of fields. just like "artist" could be anyone from a painter to a dancer or any creative practice really.

and if we use that comparison, an artist doesnt have to have a degree or even be paid to make paintings. as long as they follow the artistic process then they're an artist. same applies to scientists.
