Also, is this really a historian vs economist debate? As you have rightfully reminded us, it was economists (Wright, Fogel, etc) that first made these claims.
Fogel argued the slave South was dynamic and capitalist. They also argued slave agriculture was highly productive (more productive than northern farms), the last claim got serious pushback from economists, especially Wright, but it's largely accepted.
Those claims are distinct and different from claims about how big the contribution of slavery was, whether it was 'crucial' to US economic development, etc.
