I love writing about games for a living, but it truly bums me out that there are pretty much 0 outlets that'll take smart pitches on tabletop RPGs. (And trust me, I have them.)They're a massive part of the gaming sphere yet they remain criminally underrepresented in games writing

YouTube video essays in a nutshell: I click on a video titled "David Foster Wallace - The Problem with Irony." Guy defines irony, quotes DFW exactly once, and proceeds to talk about American sitcoms for the next 9 minutes

I'm all about poking a little fun in private but...hey, man. We don't get a steady paycheck. We don't get health insurance. If an editor doesn't reply to my email within 3 days, I start to wonder if I did something wrong. The least you can do is not laugh at our simple mistakes

If I ever got a tattoo, it'd probably say some dumb shit like (left arm) "waiting for the apocalypse or Soul Reaver 3", (right arm) "whichever comes first"

Review scores are not meant to stand the test of time. They reflect an ephemeral reality. Nobody who reviewed Quake 2 knew that Quake 3 would totally render its Strogg-slaying predecessor obsolete in 2 short years. So, keep that in mind before you jump down some editor's throat.

The next time you find yourself getting Extremely Heated about a review score, consider this: PC Gamer UK gave Quake 2 a 96%. That's the highest score they've ever given. So according to PC Gamer UK, no game has ever eclipsed the achievement of...the third-most important Quake.

Really excited for Fiasco: 2nd Edition, the first pen and paper RPG to feature no gamemaster, no prep, no dice, and - in fact - no rules at all. No text, even. Pumped to pay $11.99 for a blank PDF with the Bully Pulpit logo on the front

I always hope for the best when it comes to big franchises like Fallout, but I'm pretty sure that their vision of post-apocalyptic West Virginia probably boils down to 1. a lot of twangy guitar 2. layers upon layers of vaguely fascistic faux-nostalgia and 3. a "Blacklung Meter"

Here's a controversial opinion: Private schools should be banned. The rich shouldn't be able to buy their kids a better education. The fact that this is *is* a controversial opinion says a lot about our society, to be honest

There hasn't been a *ton* of Serious Criticism of the game's tone or themes, but what I have seen really reeks of a reflexive distrust of AAA games. Which is fair to an extent, I suppose. But guys, sometimes the hyper-violent blockbusters are just damn good.

And how that feeds into Kratos's attempts at parenting, and that maybe the fact that he's a Bad Dad is sort of "The Point" underlined in red, circled, and written in 72-point Impact font, and that it's okay to depict something that isn't 100% morally-defensible to make that Point

In general, after playing this game for so long and writing about it so much, it's striking how many critics have attempted to examine the game's conception of masculinity and fatherhood without rooting themselves in the martial culture that the game itself is steeped in
