It was a dirty word in southern MN in the 1970s. I remember trying to distribute a survey about socialism to high school students and being flatly denied permission by the principal. No debate, wouldn't even look at my questions.

It became a dirty word because Socialist party was very popular and growing. It was the labor party here. After WW1 labor fought for better wages. The 1st red scare tried tying labor to communism hence the fight against socialism is the continued fight aganst labor. No communism
