The crucial part of this is not the lawsuits, but this gem "Indiana is one of at least nine states that allow school districts to charge fees for required textbooks, according to the Education Commission of the States, a national education policy organization." WTF!!!!

Indiana is extremely regressive in general in its tax policies. Not a state that believes the better off should share with those without resources.

It’s disgusting to charge a textbook fee to begin with

This is not new. I graduated 30 plus years ago and my parents paid fees for me. Now, I’m not saying it is right; I’m just saying this is not a new practice.

People that live over the border from Chicago always crow about their low property taxes in Indiana, but then they have to pay fees for things like textbooks because the state doesn’t fully fund public services. Silly.

I initially thought parents were being charged for damaged or lost textbook. Imagine my surprise when I realized they were being charged fees just to get books. So can I just not send my kid to school if I can’t pay for books?
