It's a bit of a flaw that signing in to many free wifi services requires receipt of an SMS. There's a strong correlation between not having wifi and not being able to receive SMSs.

There's a "part two" irritation to this... my laptop is connected to wifi (it remembered an earlier login) but my phone is not. Now, why does What'sApp Web need my phone to be connected in order to work on my computer?

Because there is no long term server side storage of WhatsApp messages so WhatsApp web connects via your phone

Is that to say that messages are only sent when both phones are concurrently online? (Which is normally the case, of course...)
