I was initially skeptical about Rust's convention of having tests in the same file as the actual code, but it seems to be working out well.

Your code. It'd be essentially like turning off the type checker. Once deteriorated, it's hard to repair again later.

No, it would be the opposite of that. You would be able to retroactively tighten the "typechecker" as you make it better, learning more about code that exists, is running (and maybe can't be upgraded easily).
