I was initially skeptical about Rust's convention of having tests in the same file as the actual code, but it seems to be working out well.

I would pay a lot more attention to tests if they were right in front of me. The benefit of lexical proximity is sometimes in conflict with modularity. Lang support, tooling, yadda yadda.

Seriously though we need more degrees of freedom. Trees of files of linear text don’t provide a lot of wiggle room.
