One of the hardest most unexpected things about coming back to the US: Realizing how much Americans overuse the word "like." Listening to some girls talk, and they're averaging over 4 uses of the word "like" per sentence. How did we end up doing this to the English language?

I do hate when you watch a talk you gave and notice you had a habit of saying "phrase x" wayyy to often. I went through like 3-4 phases of bad habits... "Um", "right", "like", etc.
-
I wonder what words I overuse in English … probably "so".

Hi there fellow human. Alternative speech patterns are indeed very useful to properly communicate with our human brethren.

By "normal," you mean "American," right? Brits don't really seem to do the quotative like thing. Or am I wrong?

well, like, you know... in italy there's a very similar case with young people, which seems to consistently underuse the incredible richness of our language... I guess it's related a lot to age and context...?

It’s working Jon. Nobody suspects a thing.

Notwithstanding that, I'm perpetually anxious should anyone ever become disabused of my, like, façade.
