You know, we'd really be better off as a community if people started building on other peoples' work more. A lot of us scratch our own itches and "reinvent the wheel" from scratch again and again. This is maybe good for individuals (claim moar glory), but bad for the community.
This hints at the idea that we should maybe be better at documenting our design choices. Not always clear to me which alternative designs were tried and found to be mistakes and which were unexplored.

Yeah, I really hate when a project either doesn't mention prior art, or doesn't explain the motivation for making another project.
