Let's not speculate here if that's ok. People may not want to know, and as you mentioned it's not cool.
Just worked it out: He holds the scarf on the outside of his arm, then pulls it through his upper arm. Sorry if I spoiled it for anyone.

I just figured that out as well. I'm just not sure why his arm doesn't fall off after its been severed by the scarf.
