      But for most non-native English speakers, they just don't need to be told by me that the "l" in "salmon" and the "r" in iron are silent.

      I would certainly not say that the r in iron is silent. But a lack of 'r' sounds is characteristic of many british accents

      That's surprising! So "iron" and "ion" are different? I guess I haven't heard many Americans saying "iron"…(Though I watched IronChef once!)

      yeah, but then again, as @tpolecat said, "iron" is "EYE urn" not "EYE ron". and "ion' is "EYE on"

      Yeah, though we'll also insert one where it doesn't exist: I'll say, "I saw [r] it", which sounds natural to me but really grates with some.
