You will probably find that *I* will correct *you* on this sort of thing, as I know you...
But for most non-native English speakers, they just don't need to be told by me that the "l" in "salmon" and the "r" in iron are silent.

In American it's usually eye+urn, but eye-un in precious old lady inland Southern, arn in Texas.

I would certainly not say that the r in iron is silent. But a lack of 'r' sounds is characteristic of many british accents

That's surprising! So "iron" and "ion" are different? I guess I haven't heard many Americans saying "iron"…(Though I watched IronChef once!)
