I quite like the self type syntax myself, although I haven't had much of a chance at tying myself into knots with it yet

Aha, I'm not a fan of the self-type syntax. ;) I think it makes the constructor body look like a method, which it isn't...

And I'd say the early-initializers are obscure and unfamiliar... but I guess I accept them for what they are!

I can see what you mean about self-type. But now I read it as trait X where this (is a Y)/(has Z) and it doesn't trouble me. Also,

Well it can refer recursively to self—as is typical with objects (aka "open self-recursion" for academics).
