That got confusing confusing!
I think I got it to mostly do what I wanted, by the end of the experience, but it seemed like there was a lot of luck involved...

IIRC part of the problem was a lack of clarity between low- and high-level APIs.

That, and the fact that the various APIs are all basically mutating global state.
