Is the problem that they don't quite offer a complete replacement for sealed traits and case classes?
I'm not sure it is that way, if you read @odersky's original motivation. I totally believe that he added the feature reluctantly...

I'm also not convinced by them. But I'm unwilling to binarily call them a disaster before I've tried using them extensively.

I worked on multiple enum implementations over the years, and based on that experience, I'd readily call them a disaster and embarrassment.

I have never seen so many features "reluctantly" added in such a short time. Dotty will certainly make Scala more minimal and orthogonal⸮

I spoke to Martin about this. There are two reasons: Firstly, the Dotty compiler is less brittle. Secondly, people are not reporting bugs.
