It's there to disambiguate between the erased Java signatures, though it's an ugly solution...
An alternative might be to implement the method once, taking an implicit typeclass instance which actually provides the implementation.

The problem is that one version has repeated arguments, and the other doesn't, so the API would have some...redundancy.
