Can anyone say anything in defence (or defense) of the MM/DD/YY date format? It must exist for some reason. Does anyone know what it is?

I like this explanation. Most significant digits on the left, just a different interpretation of significance!

otoh in DD/MM/YYYY is trivial to ignore the first part and end up with MM/YYYY (still partially valid) :)
