Best guess is that this network uses some different, unfamiliar feature of my laptop's wifi chipset. Possibly more kernel rebuilds required.
After an evening trying to stop my computer repeatedly locking up, including a few kernel rebuilds, I found the problem: this hotel's wifi.

It's a Marvell chip. No big surprise that not everything runs smoothly on Linux... Just funny it's triggered by a wifi network!
