      sadly I've had too many instances of having to go to mutable data structures for performance reasons

      order of magnitude. If I can find/write a faster immutable HashMap it might be usable, but the out of the box Scala impl, nah

      There's also some Option boxing going on in scala.collection.immutable.Map. IIRC I got a 4x improvement with a specialized rewrite.

      No, it was wrapping a Java HashMap, IIRC. It was a few years ago now...
