For years my phone responded fine to "OK Google". Now it asks to train itself to my voice and with no amount of repetition will it hear me.

it's the posh accent that does it. Try with a heavy french accent, seems to work for me.
Incidentally, I've had my phone in French recently, and what you say is completely true!

not to sound horribly smug, but I find that a heavy french accent works for most things.

I can certainly assert that speaking French with a heavy English accent gets me a lot further in France than English...
