I now have a desktop with Gitter, Slack, Twitter, Facebook, GMail and GitHub always open. For keeping updated it's horrible but adequate.

@propensive Gitter, Slack, Twitter and Facebook can all be accessed using an IRC client. Works well for me, less inboxes.
@michalrus_ I'd be interested to experiment with something like that. Though perhaps I wouldn't choose IRC as the target...
