Feature branch vs. toggle contrast is useful. Has anything similar been discussed for more general variants (eg. platform or configuration)?

@propensive To the best of my knowledge Gentoo goes for configuration rather than branching (as does the Linux kernel).
@milessabin I think it's mainly configuration, plus patching (particularly of the kernel).
