Has anyone else used the trick of adding a few strategically-placed `new Array(1000000)`s to check for memory leaks?

Could someone pls explain how allocating a bunch of memory could help detecting leaks?
Like @courieti said. A memory leak may take hours to cause serious problems in a long-running application, because it takes the failure to garbage collect *millions* of objects before an OutOfMemory exception. But increasing the footprint of each object can cut that to thousands.
