Polish (and I think most Slavic languages) are broken in the Southern Hemisphere. The words for "north" and "south" are identical to the words for "midnight" and "noon" respectively. The idea is that the direction is where the sun is at that time.

In Czech "east" is sunrise and "west" is sunset are identic words
That's interesting! I actually checked whether that was the case in Polish, and unless there are synonyms which Google Translate didn't give me, they're different words...

it's 'wschód/zachód słońca' for sunrise and sunset, literally 'east of the sun' and 'west of the sun' ;)
