Do you think the opportunity was really there? I'm sure there could have been more focus on using Scala in data science, but I have doubts that any amount of insight into Scala's potential could have been translated into actual adoption of the language. There's a lot of inertia.

I think there was. I feel like Spark and adjacent frameworks could have been getaway drug for Scala but numbr of problems such as terrible bckwrd compatibility, slow idea plugin and hostile community drove ppl off.

Yes, it was probably the closest we got to a large upswing in users of Scala (at that point in its life). Who knows if it could have actually happened, and what would have had to have been done differently...
