What English word would you use to describe a particular example of a type constructor, in the sense that `List[Int]` and `List[String]` are examples of `List`s? I'd like to avoid calling them "examples" if possible.

Variants or specifications. Not applications. This word is too overloaded.

Specifications? That does not make any sense. Did you mean specializations? FWIW: Applications is the best word. List T is a type constructor: List is applied to T to construct a type.

List[String] specifies List. Application is what I have on my smartphone.

It's what's been deprecated in favor of App since Scala 2.10.
