Well, I don't think I or anyone else should be surprised when someone promotes or defends something they have devoted time and effort to. There's nothing surprising about Raúl defending against perceived criticism of Cats, or John pushing his own libraries and ideas.
It hasn't been night and day, but John has changed his behavior: His talks have become less grandstanding, less antagonistic, and less clickbaity. He also published a blog about the reasons why he was leaving the Scalaz organisation. This was all in response to criticism.

The tweet criticising Cats and Scalaz, and one in May about Lightbend were a reversion to form, but I think there should be some acknowledgement that these are happening less frequently than before, to try to positively reinforce that movement in the right direction.

I don't follow John and had him on mute for a while (he's since blocked me), but I'm sure there's been more than those two incidents, in fact I'm willing to bet a large sum of money on it.
