Right now, there seems to be a general lack of awareness about how offputting a community dominated by angry, middle-aged, white men looks. Sure, I'm all of those things too. But I'd like people to say least have some hope that it doesn't have to be this way.
I agree with all of that. My point was intended more as a commentary that "the system" favors incumbency, and thus also rewards the challengers who attack the incumbent directly. But it sows ill-feeling, which means the approach is always a trade-off.

Again, I think that if you're going to make any contentious claim, and sometimes you need to, then at the very least, it should be precise.

Yeah: if there is an incumbent and a challenger, and the challenger can get attention by promoting comparisons against an incumbent, then that challenger has an advantage over another challenger who's vying for attention without making reference to the incumbent.
