I agree that Alex is usually very precise, but I'm getting exasperated trying to find ways to deescalate this ongoing disagreement, when literally none of the parties involved are enjoying it, whilst at the same time increasingly unable to tolerate each other.

"Technically better" is also very subjective.

Fair point, but note that you can still compare yourself to others without necessarily diminishing them. Most of the times you can explain the different tradeoffs and how your solution tackles them differently.

If you compare against other libraries put features and arguments on the table and don't make bold claims like "lib y offers no innovation over x" That devalues the work done, especially when it's not even argued for.

I think this has always been the case. It’s also important to remember that these things are never taken in isolation. For example, Shapeless is transitively on almost everyone’s class path, which is the true incumbency. It’s not so much about mindshare.

Continually presenting and re-presenting what is good and beneficial about your own thing is a great way to go about solving this. While it is tempting to include a compare-and-contrast (or worse, contrived strawmen) in such things, doing to is toxic and usually self defeating.

I understand the difficulty, but I think the point is: if you take the easy way out to crap on everybody else’s work to promote your own, you shouldn’t be surprised when everybody else gets upset. It is, after all, part of the process.

Yes, I am not suprised that people get upset about things they've devoted time and effort to. But the innocent bystanders, would benefit much more from some magnanimity on both sides. But people are inherently selfish. I know I am.
