I disagree that it's worth nothing. The complete absence of evidence is still a datapoint. We must have been to about 30 conferences together, and literally nothing about John's interactions with other people suggests he's anything other than friendly and welcoming to everyone.

Why do people keep saying he is nice in person when the accusations have nothing to do with that? Honest question

I think there's generally a lot of fog around what accusations are being made now, and what defense he deserves, and what he doesn't. Most people seem to have some qualifications to anything they say in favor or against him.

I really think JdG defenders conceptualize this as “Travis vs JdG” and then they just ask who they like better personally. I suspect they don’t actually read the posts. I have seen very few say “I read that and everything seems fine”.

Yeah, this was part of the reason I originally tried to leave my own experiences out of the posts entirely, but when you’re dealing with assholes who won’t read something like this anyway I’m not sure it matters.

It doesn't surprise me, but it bothers me, especially coming from people that ”cares about inclusion”. The original post is an anthology of experiences described by people that have been completely ignored since its publication

This is why it makes me so angry that so many people (starting with De Goes) act like this is about a personal vendetta. The post has my name on it, but the material was composed by a group, and it's largely told in other people's words.

Travis Brown Retweeted Adam Warski
I mean, my goal was to make myself the target, so I don't mind the abuse, but it's disappointing when people like Jon Pretty promote the idea that it's a personal vendetta. For example Pretty retweeted this garbage:https://twitter.com/adamwarski/status/1169664500087304192 …

I have insinuated that it's become personal (in both directions), mostly because of the apparently disproportionate amount of time spent on John over others, but I don't doubt that you see it as fighting racism or the enablement of racism, and I have said this on occasion.

My biggest gripe has always been that it always reflects badly on the Scala community. As @posco effectively said (while omitting that the behavior is symmetrical), people have become tribal, and no longer bother to read all the evidence.

It reflects badly on the Scala community because the Scala community is unbelievably fucked up. Also I kind of resent the suggestion that I haven't bothered to read enough of De Goes's writing, surely that's not in question at this point.

No, you've certainly read enough. But people have made their minds up and don't bother to read what you or John write any more.
