And I agree with you on the sexism part - it's pretty clear. But the racism part I don't see how to make the leaps you're making. There must be some background I'm missing. I'm not minimizing the harm paulp's comments cause.

@pitopos I've never heard of Paul until now, and I can't do a proper check of his account since he deleted it, but just that one tweet that Travis posted made me go YIKES. The rabbit hole you're looking for will open by the keyword "Human Biodiversity"pic.twitter.com/41Vj55MV6r

I've been friend of Paul's for several years, and I will make the assertion that he's not racist. If I thought he were, I wouldn't entertain a continued friendship with him. I will gladly put up with him being obnoxious (to me, at least) but not racist.

I will also assert that he can be his own worst enemy in trusting that "facts speak for themselves". I've spoken to him specifically about that tweet, because it leans far too heavily either on context which most people don't have, or some amount of charity.

I know that his issue is with his perception of Google's censorship. He has ranted to me ad nauseum about it. He's made it very clear to me that he has zero interest in the actual search query, and 100% interest in illustrating Google's manipulation of search results.

FWIW, I don't think you're wrong to be disturbed by the tweet. It's ambiguous, and unnecessarily so. Better examples of search manipulation which don't show Google doing something actually *good* were probably available, and Paul's basically an idiot for choosing that one.

I also share
@runT1ME's concern about offering any sort of defense to a tweet like that, and putting my own credibility on the line in the process. But as I have chosen to remain friends with Paul, I also can't let it go unanswered.1 reply 0 retweets 8 likes -

Thank you for sharing, Jon, and for willing to take the risk to speak openly in a tense situation. Personally I'm happy to accept your explanation. I've seen that you're really making an effort to mend this divide, and imo this is the perfect kind of response. What I respect -

the most about how you've handled this - and what I criticised about your defence of John - is that you've acknowledged the potential harm that could come from a person who genuinely holds such views. And at least for me, that's what's been missing from people defending LC

Well, thank you for saying that, too—equally, you didn't have to. What I would like is for the light to be shone in the right place. I know I have a much more positive view of the makeup of the community than
@posco or@travisbrown, and I get frustrated that so much attention...1 reply 0 retweets 3 likes
...goes on certain people, and it actually distracts from more egregious examples in broader definitions of community and society. I'm certainly privileged to have spent long enough with Paul and others to know them well enough to make these judgements, though not everyone has.

I see your point about undue attention to individuals. Honestly, a part of me feels weird that I'm still talking about LC several years past the incident. But to me, it's not about a single person, but figuring out what general principle would prevent such incidents in the future

Imo what LC did was break an implicit assumption of shared values - part of the community expected that a CoC would be interpreted in a way that would preclude Moldbug, and another part expected the reverse.
