Polish has a saying, "if someone gives you a horse, don't check its teeth". This is clearly a direct parallel of the English idiom, "don't look a gift horse in the mouth," but a darned sight less ambiguous. /cc @rentalcustard

The German version, "Einem geschenktem Gaul schaut man nicht ins Maul", is again much closer to the English one. Interesting how such things stay throughout the languages^^
But those cunning Germans managed to find less-commonly-used words for "horse" and "mouth" which rhyme!

They are uncommon now in high German. And slightly negative. But in dialects and older times that might have been different.
