No, I think they're used interchangeably these days. I certainly hear, "and now, the news and sport". The more I think about it, the more I think that "sports" is used as an adjective, and "sport" as a noun, because I would expect alternatively, "and now, the sports news".

I listened to BBC4's News Quiz today. They were talking about sports starting up. One panelist consistently used "sport," another "sports," and a third would swap back and forth based on who she was following. I concur with your summation of interchangeable based on this anecdata
