The pertinent section in the news is still called "Sport" though, right? In the states, you could imagine the anchor turning to the sports report and saying "And now for Sports..."
No, I think they're used interchangeably these days. I certainly hear, "and now, the news and sport". The more I think about it, the more I think that "sports" is used as an adjective, and "sport" as a noun, because I would expect alternatively, "and now, the sports news".

I listened to BBC4's News Quiz today. They were talking about sports starting up. One panelist consistently used "sport," another "sports," and a third would swap back and forth based on who she was following. I concur with your summation of interchangeable based on this anecdata
