I tend to immediately scroll to the http://README.md , assuming one is available!
I'm surprised GitHub's directory listing has kept pride of place at the top of every project page for as long as it has. I predict in the not-too-distant future it will be collapsed by default. People don't need to see a list of 20 dot-prefixed config files for 20 random tools...

In GitLab I believe there's a user setting whether the default page is Repository (like GitHub) or Project (focus on readme; other general info)
