Let me add: if this is a book, clarify it early on. Also, many guidelines (especially for math) suggest "function foo is applied to arguments/expressions/... bar", which makes things clear even to the other school of thought :-)
Agreed. The other option (for the hypothetical book) is to use it so casually and frequently, but always precisely, that people can't get far without getting the idea.
