I'm really not sure why they didn't, though, because undesirable styling metadata hidden in text is still prevalent in virtually every word processor and email client in use, and even after about three decades of this, we're still suffering the irritation of that legacy daily.

I love markdown, I believe it strikes a perfect balance between fully blown text editors and Latex (for majority of my needs)

Weird. I’m a dev yet I find it better alternative from what we had before. Mostly because Slack never implemented the automatic triple quote close on open like gitter.

I find it most annoying when editing, and I'm not sure whether I'm inside or outside the marked-up region. The auto insertion of ``` was fine (on both Gitter and Slack) because it was clear enough in both cases that they were there, which made a significant difference.
