For the task/project at hand, what were the alternatives that you discarded in favour of Javascript?

True. I guess it was the only native cross browser and cross platform solution that didn’t require additional installation or plugins. Silverlight was another, came and didn’t take over. I wonder how java might have faired if there wasn’t the feud about it with MS at the start.
Java got a name for itself early on for being very slow, and requiring very frequent security updates. Which was somewhat fair. I think that colored people's opinions about it more than the Microsoft feud... J++ was flattery by imitation, no? ;)

Well certainly problematic in the browser. J++ haha, I had almost eradicated from my memory banks, now it’s back. I lose. Always seemed like browser wars and instability crippled Java. I don’t know. Water long under an old bridge now...
