The streets of Kraków are mostly quiet, but every so often I watch an ambulance rush along the full length of these streets, and it's quite eerie to think that it's probably for another victim.pic.twitter.com/TvEZaOJLfO

What brought you to Poland before all of this, anyways?
I don't know if you remember when I saw you in Australia, but I think I was on something like continent number four of eight (I'm not deduplicating, obviously) in the space of a month, and I was starting to feel really quite drained from all the travel...
Two continents later, and I had just finished Scala Days in Switzerland, and was on my way to Japan, via a stopover in Warsaw. My plane was running late, and I was starting to dread the 10+ hr journey to Tokyo (before another flight to Osaka)...
So the plane left Warsaw, and flew for a couple of hours, before the pilot told us it had developed a problem, and she had to dump the fuel over Belarus and turn back. There's a photo somewhere on my feed of a lot of fuel coming out of the end of the wing...
And I was so tired at that point, and I felt so detached from what was going on around me that I didn't really feel any concern for the plane... I just wanted to get some sleep.
So we landed back safely in Warsaw, and I hung around the airport a bit, while they were repairing the plane. I started to read up on refunds for late flights. I had already missed my connection to Osaka, and my first night's accommodation (the only one I had booked).
So I enquired at the LOT helpdesk, and they allowed me to forego the flight and get a partial refund. I spent a night in a hotel in Warsaw, and took a train to Kraków the next morning, where I already had several friends.
A couple of days later, I enquired about renting a flat, and within about a week I was renting my first apartment in about five years.
Only joking. I left my passport at a conference, and I'm too embarrassed to go to the embassy to get a new one.
