After a decade of full-time FP I am very bad at doing anything that requires index/offset computations. I want to annotate expressions as @index and then have a tool change them at random (flip differences, incr/decr, etc) until my tests pass bc that's basically my process.

Well true but I used to do it all the time in Java and was at least somewhat better at it.
