I have spent most of today banging eyelets into sack cloth. Not figuratively. But I now have twelve uninterrupted metres of self-watering flowerbed on my balcony. And nothing growing in it.
My apartment's balcony came with a metal mesh (about 6" spacing) "trough" designed to hold a series of planters. But there was nothing stopping me making one big planter, so I lined it with sack cloth and used twine to hold everything in place, lined it, and filled it with soil.

And I buried a leaky hosepipe along the length of it. And a knife, maybe.

Er, won’t that rot out in a year or two?

Yes, possibly, though I'm thinking more like 4-5 before it needs replacing. The lining should survive longer, though.
