I'm not a doctor, but... a false positive the first time seems like a more plausible explanation. For something so contagious, wouldn't it be highly likely a lot of people would "reinfect themselves" with some residual virus, if they hadn't gained immunity?

that, or a specific immunity problem with that person. But you can still imagine it was two sufficiently different strains (boat vs in land) from a highly mutable virus (unlikely and a very bad scenario for us)
