I just landed in Dubai to see the thin crescent of the moon, low in the sky, with—as I'm close to the equator—its tips almost aligned to the horizontal... like the grinning mouth of some fantastical but invisible creature. How apt on the 200th anniversary of John Tenniel's birth.

I had not appreciated this fact about the Moon in full. I feel stupid. I will try impact of locations in Stellarium later when I get 5, to educate myself on such a basic thing that I should probably have known already.
The sun also goes backwards round the sky when you're in the opposite hemisphere!

It still rises in the East and sets in the West... but via the North or South, depending on where you are. It subtly confused me on my first trip to the Southern Hemisphere.
