Yup, we call Germans "Němci" because they are "němí", i.e. mute, but it also had a meaning of "unintelligible" in the past, a meaning for someone who is foreign and these guys were the foreigners you had the biggest chance to meet at that time.

I just thought it was amusing that "Germany" declined into the locative "Niemczech" contains "nie" and "czech"...
