Does anyone else seem to spend 50x more time deleting characters like ", } and ) which their IDE inserts automatically, than they save not having to type them on the fewer occasions they get inserted in the right place? Or is it just me?

It's not just IDEs, but all kinds of rubbish text editors in various applications. When entering parens, I reflexively type () and move the cursor back one. I've been doing this since 1992, so there's no way I can unlearn that behaviour.

I think we're in the minority, but I feel your pain. I'm hopefully it's just a matter of getting used to different ways of doing things...

I've got my eyes on metals, which I test drive periodically. But vim with tags still suffices for me so far. I could see adopting metals for certain tasks.

I'm using Metals with VS Code and Vim mode... and I sense comfort on the horizon.
